  • Apgar Score. A method newborn assessment based on five characteristics: heart rate, respiration, reflex irritability, muscle tone, and skin color. Described by anesthesiologist Virginia Apgar (1909-1974) in 1953.
  • Arias-Stella Phenomenon. Also called the Arias-Stella Reaction, this describes pregnancy-related changes in cytologic material obtained from the cervix or vagina (such as a Pap smear) that may be confused with atypical glandular changes and which may be confused with adenocarcinoma. Believed to be caused by increased gonadotropin stimulation. There is marked hypertrophy of the secretory glands, hyperchromatic and pleomorphic nuclei and occassionaly atypical mitotic figures. Described by Javier Arias-Stella (Peru) in 1954.
  • Asherman’s syndrome. Intrauterine adhesions or synechiea typically following a D&C or other uterine surgery. Described by gynecologist Joseph Asherman in 1948 (though first described by Fritsch in 1894).
